Edwards Aquifer Protection Program
The Edwards Aquifer is one of the most protected water resources in the United States covering 4,350 square miles across 11 counties. Areas present in Kinney, Uvalde, Medina, Bexar, Comal, Hays, Williamson and Travis counties have special regulated zones.
The Edwards Aquifer Protection Program regulates activities that have potential to pollute the aquifer. Anyone planning to build on the recharge, transition or contributing zones of the Edwards Aquifer must first file a detailed application, including a professional geologic assessment, engineer prepared construction plans, and have the application reviewed and approved by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ).
